7 Mistakes to Avoid When Planning Your Destination Wedding
Published: 17th June 2015
Your wedding day is arriving and you have done a lot of planning to make your dream wedding come true. Hopefully you have had some help to make things easier, but there are a few things that you will want to avoid. Here is a list of mistakes to take into consideration…
THE WRONG WEDDING ATTIRE
You are dressed in your wedding gown and picture perfect, but did you remember that the elements outside are unpredictable. The sun and wind are beautiful, however they can be devastating while you walk down the aisle. You might want to choose a gown that has a light flowing material to keep you cool under the sun. Your footwear should be easy to walk in on the sand. Consider a flat, flip flops, or sandals, because heels will just sink into the sand. Also think about whether or not you are going to wear a veil. No matter what the length, the wind is going to blow it everywhere. One way to remedy that is to weigh it down with clear fishing line weights. Finally you may want to reconsider a train. It will just get dirty in the sand.
Now think about your beauty routine before and during your wedding day. You should do any waxing, tanning, facials, and visit the salon before you arrive at your destination. This will give your hair and body the time to adjust and settle. Stay away from tanning lotion, if you are not comfortable at the tanning salon you should get a spray tan two days before your ceremony. Be careful not to get a sunburn and remember that you don’t want any tan lines – bring a strapless bathing suit or top. On the day of your wedding, look at yourself in the mirror and in the natural light to make sure your look is flawless. You also want to make sure and carry some touch up make-up with you so that you can reapply.
YOUR GROOM, BRIDAL PARTY AND GUESTS
Everyone should be cool and comfortable while joining you on the beach. Choose a fabric that is light for your bridesmaids and easy for the groomsman. Let your groom help you choose his attire so that he compliments you, but he is comfortable too.
As for your guests, there are many things that you can do to make them enjoy your wedding with ease. When you send out your invitations make sure to include the dress code for the wedding day, you will want to write it somewhere on your website too - do you want them to dress Beach Formal, Dressy Casual, or Casual?? On the day of your wedding think about having sunglasses, sunscreen, flip flops, fans, and water bottles available. These will make being under the hot sun more manageable for your guests.
AT THE CEREMONY SITE
You’ve planned an amazing wedding on the beach, but did you think about all the little things that could get in the way. First make sure you have a back-up plan in case the weather interferes. Having another site on hand will insure you have a wedding no matter what. On the day of your wedding, have signs with your name on them pointing the way to the ceremony site for your guests. When they arrive, they might not know where to go or know that they have arrived at the right spot. Once they’ve taken their seats, let the natural beauty of the site take over for your decorations. There is no need to over decorate. Also take into account the elements, make sure that there is not a lot of noise. There is nothing worse for your guests then not being able to hear you say your vows.
You are officially husband and wife and now it is time to party. Before the wedding day, make sure that the venue and vendors know that they have to set up the reception. Bring the favors and décor to decorate with. Ask that the flowers be placed at the last moment because the sun can do a lot of damage to them. Finally remember your cake. You’ve had the most beautiful cake made for you and if it is placed in the sun, it will melt! Keep your cake and desserts are refrigerated and brought out when you are ready for them.
BUDGET AND TIME
When planning any wedding you will want to create a budget. There can be a lot of extra costs that you may not have thought off. One unexpected expense is traveling to your destination to make all of the arrangements. You should consider choosing a wedding planner, but they need you to decide on the details that you would like. This leads to procrastination – don’t do it! Make sure to stick to your checklist (read my Checklist Article). There are things that you must do earlier when planning a destination wedding.
Here are a few extra things to take into consideration when it comes to your wedding. Think about purchasing Wedding Insurance. This will cover you financially if anything happens during the wedding. Make sure you get all of your paperwork in order. Passports and Visas must be up to date. Find out what the legal rules are for your destination. Each will have different requirements to get married. Also ask about the legal rules about your ceremony site. You don’t want to be on the beach where there might be public access, or at a place where a wedding is not allowed. Some sites require a permit. Last but not least, don’t forget your guests. Having activities planned for them will let them enjoy their trip to your destination. In their Welcome Bags, include a map, a list of local restaurants, and the local attractions. You want to make them feel as welcome as you can.
Avoiding these possible mistakes will make your wedding a breeze. You will walk down the aisle with nothing to worry about. Let the wind blow through your hair, feel the soft sand under your feet, hear the waves crashing on the shore, and watch the sunset behind you as you say your vows. Your destination wedding will be a beautiful memory for you and your guests!
