Before we try to understand the "Advantages of Motion Sensor Light & How to Install It", its imperative that we understand what a Motion Sensor Light does. A Motion Sensor Light as its name implies is a Light with a pre-integrated factory fitted Motion Sensor. Over the last 2 decades there has been a distinct proclivity towards energy conservation and green building initiatives especially in Lighting Control as it constitutes roughly 70% of the total electrical consumption in an enclosed Building.

Gradually Motion Sensing Technology was gaining prominence and traction with the Architects and Developers who started using them Commercially with their existing light fixtures. However, the application of these Motion Sensors were limited to Commercial Applications like Car Parks, Stairways, Corridors, Public Toilets etc. There remained a potentially huge market for applications the Residential and Personal Spaces which could only be covered by the MOTION SENSOR LIGHT.

The MOTION SENSOR LIGHT, saw its introduction in the mid 1980's by a German Company Steinel. Steinel was already an established Stand Alone Motion Sensor Supplier both for the Passive InfraRed as well as the Microwave Technologies. The extension of using these motion sensors as a composite solution in Lights was the logical step to take so that the footprint of the technology could be enhanced expeditiously considering it was an unexplored and virgin market.

The Advantages of using a Motion Sensor Light are being enunciated below:-

Its a Composite Light Fixture with a Motion Sensor

The cost of a basic light fixture was reducing gradually and new technologies were finding their way into the Commercial Market making the introduction of a Motion Sensor for single light fixtures unviable and possibly untenable. After the Incandescent Bulb and the HID were being phased out only to be replaced by the Fluorescent and more recently the LED, the Motion Sensor manufacturers were finding it difficult to justify the installation of their product especially with respect to the payback calculations. The best solution was to offer a Composite Light Fixture with a pre-integrated Motion Sensor Light. This would ensure that the Architects would remain interested in perpetuating their Green Building Initiatives by using these Motion Sensor Lights. Furthermore, they would not have to worry about justifying the costs of installing a Motion Sensor separately which was the situation earlier.

Reduced Costs of Wiring & Cabling

A payback or a Return on Investment catalyses the interest levels leading to a purchase. When installing a Motion Sensor, the wiring costs apart from the basic cost of a Motion Sensor are the two most important contributors to a lower ROI (Return on Investment). The costs of cabling and labour to install a light fixture over a large establishment needs to be underscored. Coupled with that cost is the additional cost of running Sensor Cabling to the very same locations where the light fixtures are being placed - which probably doubles the costs making the Return on Investment virtually unviable.

What the Motion Sensor Light does, is reduce the cost of the additional wiring and labour as its a composite light fixture with in built motion sensors.

How to Install it & Ease of Installation

One of the reasons why the Motion Sensor Light is becoming gradually prominent, is its ease of installation. To understand this one needs to comprehend the complexity of erecting and installing a Motion Sensor. For a typical Motion Sensor to work correctly, the exact location, wiring, settings all are very complicated & difficult. With Motion Sensor Light, the settings are very basic which can be done by any electrician or end user. The wiring inputs have 3 terminals I.e Live (L), Neutral (N) & Ground (G) while there are no outputs as is the case of a standard Motion Sensor. Its because of these reasons that the end user can install these products without assistance at a fraction of the cost of retrofitting a motion sensor with an existing light fixture.
