GHAZIABAD: With several incidents of chain snatching, besides eve-teasing and minor assaults, being reported in the city of late, a sense of insecurity
seems to have crept in the minds of Ghaziabad residents.
To tackle the situation the district administration has decided that school students, especially girls, in the city need to be trained in self-defence. The
administration, along with the district sports department, has decided that girls will be taught martial arts.
This idea is the brain child of district chief development officer Zuhair Bin Sagir, who claims to have carried out the same exercise during an earlier
posting in Bulandshahr.
According to Sagir, “Not only do we have to teach girls how to defend themselves, but also develop confidence in them. Along with the sports department, we’
ve decided to set up a committee that will supervise their training. We plan to hold 21-day-long camps in Mahamaya Stadium. A batch of 500 will train in each
camp and our target is to train 10,000 girls. We are in touch with experts who have assured us that convenient packages can be worked out. The committee will
bear the cost of boarding and lodging of the experts, many of whom have to be called in from outside.”
Letters are being sent out to both government and private schools offering them the training opportunity. And the idea mooted by the administration is being
welcomed. Prabha Singh, a resident of Raj Nagar district centre, said, “I have a daughter and I am very eager for her to learn how to protect herself from
hoodlums. I think the administration has taken a wise decision.”
Echoing this sentiment is Prabha Sharma of Vaishali, “This is a great idea at a time when snatchings and eve-teasing have created a sense of fear. The
schools should grab the opportunity.”

Americans use a gun in self defense every 13 seconds
Americans use a gun in self defense once every 13 seconds, according to a peer-reviewed study.
The National Self Defense Survey, as conducted by Florida State University criminologists in 1994, indicates that Americans use guns in self defense
2,500,000 times per year, which is once every 13 seconds.
In about 30% of the defensive gun uses, the would-be victim believes that the gun “almost certainly” or “probably” saved a life.
In more than 1/2 of the self defense gun uses, the would-be victim was under attack by 2 or more criminals, making a firearm the only viable means of self
defense for most people.
The overwhelming majority of these defensive gun uses were never reported by the news media.
Gun ownership protects 65 lives for every 2 lives lost, and the overwhelming majority of of those lives lost are due to criminals who ignore gun bans anyway.
