Cambodia is a country that is mysterious and striking as its location in South East Asia. For many years this tropical country amazed visitors and archeologists alike by uncovering some of the world’s most treasured relics and monuments found to date.

One such mystery filled site is the Preah Khan, situated west of Jayatataka baray and in the south west part of Preah Vihear province. This grand structure was built by the Cambodian king Jayavarman VII to celebrate his victory over the invaders at that time. It is said to be part temple and part monastery influenced and modified by many kings throughout the years. It has stood ground after facing a number of invading forces in the past.

Now mostly in an unchanged but preserved state by the World Monuments Fund, the Preah Khan is a rectangular building which is said to be the largest historic complex found in Cambodia. Used both as a temple for the Buddhist and Hindus, evidence can be seen of sculptures, shrines and statues to support this claim. It also houses a number of monuments of worship for many deities and gods of the Cambodian culture. With stone decoration of asparas, naga and decorated columns all around it, it is considered of great archeological value and an intricate part of Cambodia’s intriguing history.

This architectural masterpiece does not stand alone, being surrounded by other smaller but captivating and priceless historic relics. A visit to Preah Khan is surely a memorable one and it is one historic site in Cambodia that should not be missed by any traveler to this exotic place.

When visiting Cambodia and touring all the historic sites of this archeologically rich country, what better place to make your trip more exciting than a stay at a hotel in Siem Reap, such as the Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor which is regarded by many as being one of the best five star hotels in Cambodia.
