If you have a website, you need to make sure that the site is optimised for the major search engines and of course your visitors. The more effort you put into making sure the pages are the best they can be, the greater the future rewards will be.

– Navigational Structure. A Search Engine needs to be able find all of your pages easily, efficiently and quickly, and of course, so does any customer or visitor you are hoping to attract. Make sure your menus are clearly laid out, sorted into relevant sections where possible and are accessible on all pages. You can have one top menu on all pages and maybe have side menus on each section page, as this gives good access for the engines and visitors.

– Header Tags. Make sure all of your pages have H1 tags, where this tag contains the most relevant information about what the page is actually about. For example, if you had a page selling designer white shoes, make sure your H1 tag is Designer White Shoes, as this lets the engine know what the page is about and also is a good way to get some decent keywords mentioned, so think carefully but do not try to trick anyone.

– Optimised Content. Make sure the content is of a very high quality for both the visitor and the search engine. Unique content is far better when it comes to ranking, and if it flows well, is informative and above all useful and not clutter, both the engine and the visitor will be more inclined to like your site.

– Optimised Images. If you are going to feature a lot of images on the page, make sure they are optimised. By this we mean make sure they are not too big in both size in terms of dimensions and actual allocation size. If the images are too heavy, it will take longer for the page to load which will effect the efficiency of the spider and probably will make the user go elsewhere, as people do not have time to wait for pages to load.

– URL Canonicalization. Looks like a big word, but really, it just means picking the best URL for the page you are displaying. Try to stick to one kind of format and structure and you can always use a 301 redirect if you have a mixture.

– Keyword Density. If you have a webpage displaying a product or service, it makes sense that you try to mention that product in the page quite often, but you must never stuff the page full of the same old keywords. Try to make sure that you do give a good mention of what you’re trying to do, but mix it up a little, go for some long tail keywords as well and never simply product content just for keyword purposes, it doesn’t work in the long run.

– Alt Text. For any images you have on your site and even links, make sure you give them an Alt Text. This is not only a good way of letting the engines and in some cases the visitor know what the image or link is about, but you can also use it as a way of getting a few keywords into the page, but again, do not over do it.

– Site Map. Make sure you have sitemap on your site that is in a non xml format, either html, htm, asp or php depending on what your pages are coded in. Engines like to make sure you do everything to make your site accessible for your users and an onsite sitemap is considered a good thing. Don’t forget your XML Sitemap in your webmaster tools as well.
