In the FIA Formula One World Championship calendar, the Singapore Grand Prix holds a prominent position and is a great event for those seeking to catch some electrifying racing action. Presently held in Singapore’s Marina Bay area, this internationally renowned and truly exhilarating motor race is the only Formula 1 night race in the world.
The race was initially organised in 1961 and was then known as the Orient Year Grand Prix. A year later the race was renamed as the Malaysian Grand Prix. After gaining independence in 1965, the race which was held at the Thomson Road circuit was once again renamed as the Singapore Grand Prix of which it is popular today.
However, this enlivening event came to a halt in 1973 due to various reasons such as the increase in traffic, inconveniences caused as a result of the closing of roads, the rise of oil prices as well as the tragic accidents caused during the races held in 1972 and 1973. However in 2008, the event was resurrected under the official title Formula 1 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix. With the revival, the first race was held at the Marina Bay and it was the first night race ever taken place in the history of formula one races.
It is recorded that an astounding 110,000 tickets were sold out for Singapore’s first ever formula one race. The time of the event was planned out carefully in a way that provided the audiences of European Television the chance to tune in and enjoy the race. The impressive race track was lit up with a line of projectors and the race was won by Fernando Alonso of the Renault team.
During the race weekend many internationally known artists perform at the circuit adding more colour and vibe to the event. Furthermore, special eye catching merchandise is put on sale at various authorised outlets in relation to the race each year.
