The race was initially organised in 1961 and was then known as the Orient Year Grand Prix. A year later the race was renamed as the Malaysian Grand Prix. It is recorded that an astounding 110,000 tickets were sold out for Singapore’s first ever formula one race. The impressive race track was lit up with a line of projectors and the race was won by Fernando Alonso of the Renault team.
