Many people know that SMART goals is an acronym for specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely goals. Here is the question - if these goals are so smart why do so many people have a hard time achieving them?

Here I dish the real reason. I also provide the recipe for better results. Let's consider your particular goal in terms of a recipe with specific ingredients. Your recipe card list your ingredients for goal achievement. Let's see, you need 20 cups of effort, 75 hours of time, 14 tasks completed, and 30 days of cooking time. Hmmm....you never tried this recipe you say? No problem. The instructions
are clear. It states you mix 3 hours of prep time and stir in 5 cups of effort. From there you mix your remaining effort and time equally. Your tasks include measuring, mixing, stirring, tasting, and monitoring. After 30 days you should have smart goals success. Instead........

30 Days later you have a failed recipe that is undercooked. The texture and taste leave much to be desired. You are embarrassed to serve up your results. In defeat, you wonder what happened. Ready for the answer? It comes in the form of questions:

1. Was this a recipe you were interested in eating? If you're not interested in serving or eating your creation you are not going to commit to it's success. Many people do not have smart goals achievement, because they are not interested, truly committed, or significantly motivated towards its success. They tried to build success on a shaky foundation.

2. What was the quality of the ingredients used? Did you use the cheap stuff (settling for less than excellence) or did you go for the best. Its a known fact that you get out of something what you put into it. Ask Mrs. Fields (the maker of Mrs. Fields cookies - it's the ingredients!).

3. Did you follow the measurements exactly as indicated for each ingredient? Or, did you take short-cuts and/or add them out of order? You see, many people do not achieve goals because they do not follow the plan as indicated. They skip steps, go out of order, or change the pattern for success. Then, the wonder why they fail.

Top Chefs cooking up smart goals success have known all along, just because the recipe is written down for all to use -- it the effort, quality, and ability to follow the recipe correctly that determines the outcome. There you have it.....now dish up your own success.
