Academic study in the United States of America can be a rewarding and enlightening endeavor. Some of the luminaries of academia reside in the United States in order to teach and study at such institutions as Columbia University, Princeton, UC Berkeley, and the University of Chicago. For a Citizen of the Kingdom of Thailand to travel to the USA and study, they must first obtain an American F-1 Student Visa.
The US Student Visa, or F-1 Visa, is utilized by those aliens wishing to study in the USA. In the eyes of some prospective immigrants, acquisition of a US student visa can appear at first to be an insurmountable obstacle. Some prospective applicants mistakenly believe that they cannot acquire a US student visa because they lack intelligence and substantial financial resources. In most cases, these concerns are unwarranted. In reality, both of these concerns are only partially correct. The US Student visa does require that the applicant show that they can pay for their course of study for its entire duration. Also, a US F-1 visa will probably be approved if the beneficiary in highly technical fields of study. That being said, since it is a student visa, in certain situations the applicant needs the travel document because the field of study and specialized curriculum is completely unavailable in their home country.
A common question amongst those seeking to lodge an F-1 visa application involves working in the United States. Many F1 applicants wish to work while in the USA. For the most part, those with a US Student Visa will be precluded from engaging in gainful employment while stateside. That being said, there are certain instances where this is not the case. An F-1 visa may allow a foreigner to be employed in the United States provided that the employed falls under that permitted under US Immigration and Labor regulations.
In general, a foreign student will be permitted to work only at the institution at which he or she is studying. Also, the alien student may have restrictions imposed upon him regarding how many hours of employment he may lawfully engage in per week. As a general rule under the law, a foreign student may only work for a maximum of 20 hrs per week. Sanctions may be imposed upon those who disobey the regulations precluding illegal employment.
