When my wife and I had our house built two years ago, we considered many improvements from out the outset. We covered the upstairs, the garage and so forth. One of the unanticipated improvements that we didn't think about tackling was our water system, and more specifically, our water filtration system. We didn't have one, and we came to soon realize that we would need one.

The first sign that we would need one was the hard water spots that we found on the bathroom shower walls. This was followed by the extreme chlorine taste and the dry feeling that we got when we took a bath or shower. It all summed up to be a need to condition our water. But where to start, and where to buy? That's where the research kicked in. It is imperative that you go online and ask people for advice because what has worked for others, may work for you too. And there are a ton of different systems online to buy or research.

Let's start with the basics: cost. You'll find a brita system for $35 and it will consist of a cartridge fed water jug that filters your drinking water. This is a great solution for drinking conditioned water. We used it for a little while (4 months before changing the filter) and then moved onto something bigger and more expensive because of our needs.

You'll remember that I said we experienced issues while showering and bathing. A brita jug wasn't going to fix that problem. So I upped the ante and spent close to 2500$ to get a reverse osmosis water filter system put in the house. It's a two stage system that filters water using the reverse osmosis principals. There were other methods and brands to use (look at Pur when you get a chance), but for us this was the way to go. Our need was direct and the cost effect was big, but it was reasonble for what we were asking it to do: condition and filter a ton of water in the house. Your filtration cost will be dependant on the manufacturer as well as the brand and size of your house.

Just remember, you need to do research. Stop in at Lowes or Home Depot and get their opinion as well. In our first week at the house, we had someone from RainSoft stop by to sell us on that system. They wanted close to $5,000 for that system. Instead we slowed down, did our research and saved thousands in the process. You can do the same, just do your due diligence!
