CMS or Content Management System makes it a whole lot easier for you (or your client) to maintain a website efficiently and keep it up to date. The best thing about CMS is that you don't have to be a tech pro to keep a website in good shape, you only need to know what to do.

However, how much time and effort you would need to put in for the upkeep of your website depends a lot on the CMS that you choose. There are a variety of CMS options you can choose from. While some are great, some are not. Here are some tips to help you choose the best CMS for your website.

It should cater to the Main Website Function

What is the prime function of your website? Is it a static website or a full fledged e-commerce store? Does it contain many video, audio and image files?

The CMS that you chose should cater to the exact needs and requirements of your website. In case of an e-commerce website, you need a CMS that is able to integrate the whole store seamlessly. If your website has a lot of audio, video and image files, then you need a CMS that supports the contents and also has a lot of plug-ins that provide extra functions.

It should be Intuitive

The essential purpose of a CMS is to make website maintenance easier, even for the non-techies. Average users should be able to figure out how to perform basic functions like adding a new page, editing existing content, changing themes etc. without much instructions.

It should have a Standardized Backend

Make sure the CMS has a standardized format for each section of the backend. This maintains consistency and makes it easier for the user to get a grasp of things. Also, the nomenclature of elements should be consistent. If something is called a “page” at one place, it should not be referred to as “post” or “content” at other places. This would create confusion.

The Backend should be Logical and Well-Organized

All the things at the backend should be well-organized and logical. All the functions related to editing, creating new content, themes and sidebars should be clustered together at one place. This defines the basic architecture and makes it easier for the user to find out what is located where.

It should not have Unnecessary Functionalities

There is no use having a CMS with a ton of additional e-commerce features if you don't plan to do anything beyond posting information on your online brochure. More the functionalities, more will be the price and more it will be complex. It is best to stay focused and get a CMS that matches the basic functions of your website perfectly.

It should have WYSIWYG Editor

WYSIWYG editors make life very easy for the webmasters. Clients often have no knowledge of HTML and have a difficult time updating a website. However, with WYSIWYG editors, they will be able to upload content, format it, use header tags or create sections within web pages and much more. WYSIWYG editors make it possible for the non-techies to do come tech stuff.
