Mahogany is a reddish-brown hardwood with a medium grain, tends to become darker as it weathers in, and displays a beautiful reddish sheen when polished. Mahogany is divided into two, they are: mahogany with small leaves (switenia mahogany jacg.) and mahogany with bigger leaves (switenia macropphylla king). Both are belong to Meliaceae family.

Mahogany is grown in tropical areas, including in Africa, Central and South America, and countries throughout Asia including Indonesia. There, mahogany was brought by Dutch in Colonial era over 400 hundred years ago. In early period it was used as an ideal hardwood for building boat and furniture then it also use as wooden crafting furniture. In Indonesia it has been cultivated to meet the demand of wood.


Honduras Mahogany is well-known as musical instruments material, such as drums and guitar acoustics to have a softer and darker tone. Elsewhere the mahogany built to be decking and railing material since it is generally viewed as a harder wood that is extremely durable and resistance to moisture and insects.

Nowadays, the latest trend of mahogany especially in Asia is slightly close to furnishings matter. Mahogany wood furniture becomes an alternative in furniture material beside teak, ebony or cedar as its characteristics are not far from them. Beside its durability, mahogany is the kind of hardwood which responds well to hand or machine tools and carved or minimal finishing
