Here is a summary about WoW engineering and then how to level up.
It is considered a primary profession which any race or class can train.There are the gnomes that do have a slight gain being that they have the passive racial skill of increased engineering though.

In WoW an engineer will construct parts or items out of raw materials such as stones and metals.
The items you craft however can only (well mostly) be used by other engineers including yourself.Some of the items you will produce will be flying machines or helmets. Mechanical squirrel pets, guns and jumper cables (these shock a dead player back to life, cool), including repair bots to repair your gear are other of the amazing things you will create as an engineer.
It makes sense to take mining with engineering as items that you need as an engineer will be gathered through mining.Engineering therefore can be classified as another time consuming profession as the gathering will be time consuming (mining). The quickest way to getting your raw materials needed for engineering will be to purchase them from the AH but warning this will require plenty of gold.
Smelted bars will be the main ingredients if you can call them that in your engineering recipes. Buy or gather its your choice. Some items you may need can be gained by fishing as well if you have that skill. These are found in chests in the water. But you do not need fishing to gather all the items. Its not required for engineering. It can be a blast turning someone into a chicken or shrinking them with a ray but engineering can also be demanding as some of the recipes require many different components.
Engineering can take tons of gold and recovering some might take some time as your market is only targeted to the other engineers.

Train in engineering by a trainer. There are many various places that you will find engineering supplies.Various sources will be mining, smelting ores, mobs and vendors. Some formulae items are created through other formulas so do not sell these items in a hurry as you may require them later on.
