Cold calling in today’s economic climate is no longer an effective means of generating leads or making sales. This is due to the fact that no one likes to be cold calling and the market is more crowded than ever and you must stand out. Cold calling is not a good way to stand out. It will in fact make you look like everyone else, which is a major sin in sales and in marketing.

But what other ways are there to generate leads and make more sales? And what’s the most effective.

Well there are many but one particularly good method to generate sales leads is to offer your prospects bait and make them come to you.

So how does this work?

The first step you need to take is to analyze who your prospects are. You need to really understand them and know what they want (not necessarily need, but what they want). One good way is to talk with past customers and clients and ask them a lot of questions.


Once you get a good idea of what your target market wants you want to generate a free piece of bait or what I call a “lead magnet”. This lead magnet can be a lot of different things but commonly is a free report or a free video.

For example if I’m selling to seniors who are looking for the best elderly community for people like them I might create a free report titled, “The Top 5 Ways To Finding The Best Elderly Communities For You Or Your Loved Ones”.

Then I advertise my free bait piece everywhere I can to get people to come to me. So maybe someone sees an ad for my free report and they go to my website to get it. Once they go to my website I’ll capture their contact information before they get the free report and then I can follow up with them and begin building a relationship with them.


Once I have a strong relationship I can start a consultative selling process.

This allows me to be a trusted advisor making selling easier and I no longer have to cold call. I can sit back and let my prospects come to me. All I have to do is close sales which is what sales people should be doing anyway.
