In the state of Georgia the Motor Vehicle Division requires that your automobile be covered with Georgia liability insurance if you want to operate an automobile legally in the state. This must be done before you can get any kind of tag issued. If you plan on owning a vehicle or leasing in the state of Georgia, you're required by law to have mandatory liability insurance.

Any insurance company that operates within the state of Georgia, is also required to report insurance information to a state database within one month of the start of the insurance coverage. This is done by transmitting the vehicle identification numbers that the insurance companies have on file and cross-referencing them with the vehicle identification numbers in the Georgia state database. After the transmitted numbers are confirmed, a mark is placed on the vehicle's record stating that the insurance is valid. All law enforcement officials in the state have access to this database in which they can check the insurance status of cars registered within the state.

In the event that your insurance coverage is not validated on the state database, and you do not have any sort of proof that your vehicle is covered with the required state minimum liability coverage you will be unable to register a car or get any type of license plate in Georgia.

So before you plan on getting your vehicle registered, you will definitely have to make sure you have minimum liability limits on your vehicle that you plan on driving. The state of Georgia sets minimum liability limits to the following: 25/50/25. This translates to Bodily Injury Liability $25,000, $50,000 per occurrence and a Property Damage Liability of $25,000 per occurrence.
