Anchored backlinks are the main strategy to getting your site or blog to the top of the search engine rankings for your desired keyword. It has been said that there is not such thing as too many backlinks, and that if you are not ranking high enough in Google, just get more backlinks.

There are numerous ways you can use to get backlinks. I have listed below the more common ways that a webmaster uses to get backlinks.

Backlinking From Your Own Websites Or Blogs

You can start several different websites and blogs on different aspects of the same topic or on related topics. In fact, you can do both. Then you can link all of them together so that they point to each other. Or you can have a main site and have all your other sites point to that one site.

Post To Forums, Blogs And Web Directories

Another way of getting anchored backlinks is to find places which allow you to post your own backlink. Usual places would include forums, blogs, article directories and web directories. Do be respectful of a particular site's rules on how and in what manner a link can be posted, and don't contribute to the spam that is so prevalent nowadays.

Getting Other People To Post Your Link

This is about going out there and asking other people to link to your website. In many respects, this is harder that the previous 2 techniques, but pays handsome dividends as these type of links are considered to be of a higher quality by the search engines.

I have listed below a few standard ways of getting a webmaster to link to your site. But do remember that there are numerous ways to go about this and how you do it is really limited by your own imagination.

Exchange Links With Other Webmasters. Link exchanges have probably been around as long as there have been webmasters wanting to promote their websites. The idea behind link exchanges is simple. You place a link to my site and in return, I will place a link to your site. The links are usually placed in link directories specially created for such exchanges, or on the home pages of the websites involved.

Link Bait. Despite the name, linkbaiting is a legitimate SEO technique to generate visits to your website, and will also serve to create backlinks for you. Linkbaiting is essentially to come up with content, or link bait, that webmasters just have to link to, or people just have to talk about. Controversial or funny content would usually work very well as link bait.

Give Away Something Useful. First and foremost, make sure you get the rights to the product so that you can legally include some links in the product to your website or blog. And then, you give away the product to anybody and everybody that wants it. If you can't get the rights to the product, you can always request for a backlink in return for a free download of the product.

Conclusion

It was much harder to get anchored backlinks in the early days of the Internet. Nowadays, with social sites like Facebook, Twitter and others, it is sometimes as easy as just asking for a link. However, the competition for links has also increased, so you will still need to stand out with quality content. After all is said and done, the phrase: "Content is king" still holds true.
