IEEE 802.11 is a standard use across the globe for wireless local area network or WLAN. It is the abbreviated form of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Simply saying it is a standard of communication between wireless devices and computers. These standards were set by IEEE LAN / MAN Standard Committee in 2.4 GHz and GHz public spectrum. Here starts a new generation of wi-fi technology.

IEEE 802.11 consists of various services and mechanism that interconnect the present station mobility translucent to the higher stratums of the network. IEEE 802.11 is a host of wireless LAN. It also offers numerous services such as Authentication of system and vice versa, data privacy and MSDU delivery, Association with the system and its files, Distribution of data, Unification of information and much more. A system can be configured by using this protocol in two different ways- infrastructure configuration and independent configuration. The IEEE 802.11 meets the need to connect more than one computer to each other without wire.


IEEE 802.11 requires accepting device for activating in a peer-to-peer method with the possibility of overlying the same as access control stage as well as data transference services to allow the top layers. Several substantial layers are there who represent signaling techniques and interfaces. Safety and privacy of user data gets moved over the wireless media via IEEE 802.11. In accordance with OSI model an IEEE 802.11 protocol which has jumping progression, direct frequency and spread range PHY and infrared PHY. IEEE 802.11 denotes a single medium entrée sub-layers (MAC) and physical layers with different specifications. The physical layers have two radios and infrared. A physical layer contains Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum Radio PHY that offers 1 Mbit/s with two levels and 2 Mbit/s with 4 levels. Being a direct sequence spread spectrum radio PHY supplies DBPSK and DQPSK with 1 and 2 Mbit/s operation while Infrared phy offers 1 Mbit/s with 16-PPM and 2 Mbit/s.


Now-a-days 802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g are mainly used to create a wi-fi network home in commercial locations and offices. IEEE 802.11 consists of 802.1X verification, RSN maintaining the track of links, and AES-based CCMP ensuring the privacy and authenticity of the user. IEEE 802.11 with the proliferation of modems and DSL services makes it trustworthy. You may crave for setting up small networks at your home to enhance your internet connectivity.
