Department stores such as Macys have discounted summer clothes and swimwear down 50%. Added retailers have cut the prices of barbecue grills, tents, gardening tools, and loads of clothing. Some of those products are going directly to liquidation rather than to the retail stores.
This is fine for those trying to save some money, but it is a dire sign for retailers as it shows that retail sales have been failing ever since the end of May.
Consumer confidence amplified in April and May, but is expected to level off for the month of June. The figures, that come out later on today, will not be helped by the main retailers releasing June sales results next week. Customer spending makes up 70% of the economy and if customers are apprehensive about the economic situation, odds are that spending will not jump too much in the close future.
Fall merchandise will start hitting shelves in August, so these retailers are trying to sell summer merchandise to make room. This could mean that we will observe additional discounts like we did last year for clothes.
Some are blaming the weather, that has been intensely drizzly for pieces of the country. The rainfall has led to unseasonable weather.
