In the course of my interactions with teachers, students and parents, I have gained insights into the realms of home teaching or tuition and the ways it is done. With this, I would like to share my points in qualifying a quality home teacher.
Teaching at home is more expensive than teaching at a school where students are taught as a group. This being the case, there is more scrutinizing of the person who is to teach your kid. Home tutors give one-to-one assistance to their students, thus their teaching is more focused onto the student’s minds. There is more transfer of values and habits between the tutor and the student. This being the case, a parent should only hire a person who is of sound behaviors’ because who ever get hired, their traits will be impacted on the young minds they are teaching. Their teachings, values and habits are silently transferred to the student’s minds subconsciously.
A quality home tutor or a teacher is the one who is able to establish a positive rapport with their charge. They must be able to connect and speak in the same language with their student. Once a connection is made, there will be an effective communication and passage of useful knowledge.
The tutor must be a strong motivator because in most cases, students who need home tutoring may not be faring well in the subject they sought assistance for. In group tuition, the student might be facing stress from the good performance from the other students, making them perform very poorly. This results to the particular student wanting to give up on themselves resulting to an academic depression. The tutor should step in and give encouragement and push them on. The act of maintaining a positive healthy mindset is very crucial to the student’s academic performance.
The teacher should a passion for teaching and a strong desire to uplift Childs morale. This makes a child’s grades to dramatically improve. The tutor should not look at his work as just another job; rather it should be a calling. He should be able to stay behind after the normal tuition duration and updates the parents on the academic progress of the student. With proper tracking of a student’s progress, the tutor can then be able to ascertain their teaching style.
A quality tutor is an expert on their field of teaching and is able to share their knowledge positively, making an all round student who is able to stand on their own in the society at large. All in all, it is the method of sharing the actual knowledge that determines the quality of a tutor.
