The process to getting car insurance can be similar to that of getting into a relationship. Both sides are checking each other out, you're learning each other's history, and neither side is ready to rush into this relationship. You have the car, they have the insurance. Perhaps if you did a formal introduction it may help matters. Something like this:
"Hello, I have a 2001 Toyota Corolla with over 125,000 miles on it. I don't get into accidents, I don't run red lights and I promise that I'll be a great driver as long as we're together..."
However, the other side may respond like this:
"It's great to meet you! My name is [company] and I've had some bad relationships in the past, so forgive me, but I'm hesitant to jump into a relationship right away. I've seen people like you before and I can't get involved with something that looks good on the surface but really is no good. I'll need some time to think about it and weigh the pros and cons before I go further with you. Don't be mistaken... I am interested in you... I just need some time to sort things out."
I won't get into the anatomical, psychological nor emotional metaphors that one could derive from this example, but you get the idea.
There are several factors that come into play when investigating car insurance. They include, but are not limited to: your sex (not if you've had any but more so your gender), your age, your marital status, driving record, type of car and place of residence. These are items your potential insurance provider is adding in to weigh in how great this relationship can become.
I don't want to make this all one-sided as if you need to bring everything to the table. What should you look for from them? I'd start with what kind of discounts you can offer me. I have a family and multiple cars. Can you do a package deal? If you can provide me home, life and auto insurance in a package deal I may be more willing to get into this relationship with you. How quickly will claims be handled? What kind of medical coverage do you offer? What kind of hours is your office open? It's no good if I'm in an accident and I can't reach you. These are the kinds of things I'm looking for from you.
It's nothing personal, it's just business.
If you're just starting to venture into what car insurance to get, I recommend doing a thorough search of various companies to see who can get you the best deal. There are many resources through the Internet which can do these comparisons for you. Websites like edmunds.com, progressive.com, geico.com, esurance.com and others are created to provide the best options for consumers based on your criteria.
By the way, in most (if not all) states, car insurance is required by law... so if you don't have any, you'd better get some!
