There are a number of herbal remedies for menopause. Some of these herbal remedies are not regulated and therefore there is little or no research at all to back up their claims.
Soy and isoflavones are plant estrogens found in beans particularly soybeans and are said to be helpful. They offer short term relief and can help relieve hot flashes and night sweats. They are also said to have beneficial effects on cholesterol and bones.
Although they are safe when taken in dietary amounts, excess consumption of soy and isoflavone may interact with estrogen and cause harm especially in women who have a history of estrogen-dependent breast cancer. Black cohosh may also be helpful in the short term. It can help to treat hot flashes as well as night sweats. It is said to be safe and has no side effects.
Chaste berry is also used as a herbal remedy for menopause. This plant is also referred to as the monk’s pepper, Indian spice, tree wild pepper and sage tree hemp. It is said to relieve breast pain and can also help with premenstrual syndrome. A study conducted in women with premenstrual syndrome reported improvements in mood, headache, anger and breast fullness.
The evening primrose produces seeds rich in gamma-linolenic acid which some experts believe is nutritional for humans. Although primrose capsules are taken for breast pain, menopausal symptoms and bladder symptoms, there is actually no real evidence that they work. Some people have even likened primrose to a placebo. A study aimed at reducing hot flashes revealed that dong quai as a herbal remedy for menopause was not better than a placebo.
