Can you tell an agent what you need from your home insurance policy? Of course, we all have different needs, but some things will be standard for all homeowners.

They want to make sure that they can make repairs or rebuild if their house suffers damage. Remember that you could need to rebuild a new home.

If your older home cost $150,000 is that the real cost to build another house on your lot? Plus, you will probably have to pay for people to clean up a big mess.

And of course, even if your actual home is not ruined, you could have personal property damage. Expensive itemms, like jewelry, tv sets, and laptops should be insured at their replacement cost. If you insure them at stated value, they will be covered at garage sale prices.

By the way, it is a very good idea to photgraph and document your most expensive items. You can even find some good online services that will help you keep your records. An internet record keeping service will have the practical advantage of not getting ruined if your house is damaged.

Consider that your personal computer, you keep at home, could also get destroyed.

Most of us do not want to shop at garage sales for replacement items for our home! I know that I would want to be able to buy new things from a store.

We may also need a place to live if those efforts take awhile. Many homeowners insurance policies have coverage so you can rent an apartment, house, or even a hotel room for a certain period of time.

And of course, a highly rated and financial stable company will be important. We pay our premiums for years, and we want to make sure that our company has the funds to stand behind us if we do need to actually collect on our policies!

Also consider all aspects of storm damage. Most standard homeowners policies do not cover floods or earthquakes. Learn about the national flood insurance program. Your agent should be able to put you on the right track, or simply search for information online.

Last but not least, look for a company with a good customer service record. Balance the way they have handled past claims with other factors. When you really need your insurer, you will want a company who goes the extra mile to provide service.

For instance, I know one company in my area who worked hard to make sure that their clients could find temporary housing in their kid's school districts so that their education would not be disrupted. Most insurers did not bother to do that. I think that is one of those extra services that keep their clients for the long run.

And of course, you will be concerned about the premium. You know that insurance rates are local, so you need to find prices in your zip code.

You can find homeowners insurance quotes with some simple online quote forms. All you have to do is to enter your basic information one time which takes a few minutes. Then you can relax as local insurance companies step forward to compete for your business!
