Housework: a necessary, and unfortunately, often an expensive evil. I think we probably all daydream at one point or another about how nice it would be to be able to afford to get someone else to do it for us. Or we try bribing our children into helping out a little (and using the 'you made it you clean it' tactic usually only works the first couple of times.) I've come to the conclusion that while I may never be able to afford to get someone to do it for me, I can at least start saving some money and time when it comes to the products I need to help me clean.
Just by mixing and combing a few products we have around the house, or trying a different approach with certain things will go a long way to saving some money when it comes to hitting the cleaning aisle at your local supermarket.
Here's a few little tips that you may find useful.
For window cleaning: use a piece of steel-wool inside an old stocking then polish with a clean, dry duster.
Make your own window cleaner: you'll find several different suggestions just by searching the internet (or listening to some of the stories passed down by your grandparents) but one simple way is:
Mix a ? cup of vinegar and a cup of water into a spray bottle. Once used on the windows dry it with newspaper.
Vinegar can be used in a variety of ways another use is as a fabric softener/static cling reducer.
The glass in your combustion fire: simply scrunch up a few pieces of newspaper, slightly dampen it, dab the moistened paper into the ashes of your fire and scrub your glass.
When cleaning out your oven after baking: rather than having to contort yourself into all sorts of weird positions, use a long handled washing up brush. It will help to clean those difficult corners and behind fixed rungs etc.
Carpets: for any offensive smells in your carpet, sprinkle over them with baking soda, leave overnight and then vacuum the next day.
While these few simple suggestions won't make the housework any more enjoyable, they may at least save you a little time and money; hopefully that'll give you the opportunity to do something more fun.
