The question of whether it is a good idea to neuter cats or not is a debate that has been raging for years. Most animal charities are pro-neutering and it is recommended by the majority of vets too. However, some pet owners are not keen on the idea and think it is unnatural.
Neutering (for males) and spaying (for females) is basically castrating your cat. The procedure will sterilize them so they are unable to have any kittens. It has been used for many years to control the population of cats and it can reduce unwanted behaviors. There is also evidence that cats who have been neutered or spayed are less susceptible to certain illnesses and infections later on in life.
So what are the pros and cons of spaying and neutering? Let’s start with the advantages. First and most obviously, it removes the risk of pregnancy in female cats. If your cat becomes pregnant, there are extra vet bills involved as well as possible additional health risks. Ultimately, you will also have to find homes for the kittens which might be challenging. While they are with you, you will have to care for them and pay for food, vaccines and anything else they might need.
With both sexes, neutering and spaying calms the cat’s behavior. If they have been neutered, they will not have the desire to mate. The males will be less territorial and both genders generally become more affectionate and quieter if they have been neutered. Male cats are less likely to be injured while fighting with other cats and your home could also be cleaner as they won’t feel the need to mark their territory with urine.
As mentioned above, cats who have been neutered or spayed tend to have fewer ailments later in life. Testicular and ovarian cancers obviously aren’t a problem. Female cats are less prone to infections of the reproductive system and male cats are unlikely to have prostate problems.
Regarding the disadvantages of neutering or spaying your cat, the process in irreversible and will sterilize your cat for life. If you have a pedigree cat and are thinking of breeding from it a few years down the line, think carefully about your choice. You will have to decide whether it is more important to neuter your cat or be able to breed from it later.
Neutering and spaying can also cause weight gain in animals. Castrated males do not tend to grow as large as males who have not been neutered but they can still put on weight. If you choose to neuter or spay, make sure you keep an eye on how much food your cat is eating and help it get enough exercise by actively playing with it.
Ultimately, as you are the pet owner it is your choice whether you choose to neuter your cat or not. It seems like the advantages definitely outweigh the disadvantages but it is your decision to make. As with any decision of this kind, it is important that you do what you think is best for your cat.
