The working of hybrid cars is simple. There is a system fitted in the car that determines when to switch between electric power and gas.
There are two types of hybrid cars: parallel hybrids and series hybrids. The parallel hybrids are powered directly by the battery drive train. As opposed to this, a series hybrid is powered by the combustion engine, which in turn generates electric power to power the electric motor.
The basic components that make a hybrid are the internal combustion engine, battery and the electric motor. Based on the operation of these components, hybrids are mostly divided into two classes. These are mild hybrids and full hybrids. The battery charges because of the process of regenerative breaking. The battery captures the energy through this process. The battery is continuously charged in this process and hence, provides the power to the electric engine.
In case of mild hybrids, the configuration of the engine is such that the electric motor cannot function on its own and is dependent upon the internal combustion engine. Hence, the electric power acts as an auxiliary one in this case instead of the primary source of power. The electric motor can draw energy from the battery or can generate the electricity for charging the battery. However, it cannot do both simultaneously.
In a Full hybrid, the three components are integrated in such a way that it enables the electric engine and the gas engine to function independently. For light acceleration and low speed, the electric engine can work on its own, and for higher speeds, the gas engine takes over. Hence, when more power is required, both the electric and the gas engines can function together for optimal performance.
Another thing about full hybrids is that they are capable of drawing energy from the engine and simultaneously charging it as well. Whatever the differences between the engines operations of the two classes of
hybrid cars are, the fact remains that both the cars achieve the objective of enhanced fuel economy all the while giving out lower levels of emissions.
