One of the many reasons women are turning to bariatric surgery for weight loss is the difficulty in becoming pregnant. Too often, the excess fat interferes with the metabolic system and the design makes it difficult, if not impossible.
Recent studies have shown that weight loss induced by bariatric surgery such as gastric bypass or Lap Band ® often increases the risk of women getting pregnant.
But is post-bariatric surgery pregnancy healthy? Does not the fact that food is very limited it is more difficult for a developing baby to thrive? Well, apparently not.
According to a study published in the November 2008 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, it appears that pregnancy after bariatric surgery in May actually exercising less risk of certain complications in the mother that those who are obese.
The study found that nearly half of bariatric surgery patients are women of reproductive age, and this percentage continues to increase.
When these women become pregnant after bariatric surgery, several trends have been noted:
• Women who become pregnant in both gastric bypass and Lap Band ® surgery were less likely to experience gestational diabetes and hypertension that obese mothers who do not have surgery
• Women who become pregnant after bariatric surgery have roughly the same rate of premature births that obese women who had not undergone surgery.
• Women who become pregnant after Lap Band ® surgery has a rate of babies born with a very high or very low birth weight.
• Women who become pregnant after gastric bypass showed no difference in rates of high or low birth weight and premature births in women who had never been overweight at all.
One of the biggest concerns about getting pregnant after bariatric surgery is sufficient nutrition to support both the development of baby and maternal health.
According to the study, there were few cases of severe nutritional deficiencies reported. However, the researchers responsible for these instances the mother did not recommend to take the good faith of vitamins and supplements.
In addition to the standard prenatal multivitamins, pregnant women who have undergone bariatric surgery are often asked to take extra folic acid, calcium and iron to fight against potential deficiencies.
In this study, the researchers said there was not enough evidence to determine whether nutritional deficiencies were common in post-bariatric surgery pregnancy. However, the overall verdict on pregnancy following bariatric surgery appears to be positive. Not only weight loss surgery appears to make it easier to conceive, pregnancy itself carries a lower risk of complication than it would have before the weight loss.
The only sticking point seems to be, as is often the case with the post-bariatric surgery lifestyle, and be sure to take your vitamins faithfully.
Thus, with just a little more attention to nutrition, it seems that bariatric surgery patients are not only more likely to conceive than they were before surgery, but that pregnancy can be just as good health than women who were never overweight.
Many agonies, which have spent years trying unsuccessfully to conceive, this is nothing short of a miracle.
