Escape the Festive Frenzies this Christmas

Whilst Christmas may traditionally have been a holiday for Christians to celebrate the birth of Jesus, the whole meaning of Christmas has changed greatly over the years.

Indeed, it is still celebrated by the global Christian population, but it is also marked throughout much of western society and beyond as a time of giving and spending quality time with family, friends and loved ones.

A cynical person may say that Christmas has evolved into nothing more than a commercialised holiday that has been sabotaged by retailers eager to capitalise on the festive spirit; but however someone chooses to view the yuletide period, there can be little doubt that it can be a very stressful time of year.

With all the pressures of deciding what presents to buy, cooking Christmas dinner for the extended family that don’t even get along and the financial excesses, it would be easy to forgive anyone for wishing they were somewhere else for the whole period.

Of course, this won’t be the case for every family, but for those who do suffer from the ‘festive fear’, it may well be an idea to consider getting away from it all and investigate the countless destinations out there that provide at least some refuge from the trials and tribulations of the Christmas holidays.

For those who suffer from the winter blues, then an extended break in the slightly warmer climates of the Mediterranean is worth considering. However, for those who simply want to get away anywhere, then the UK has plenty to offer, and a cottage in the Hebrides, a city apartment in London or a spa break in Manchester is only a few clicks of the mouse away.

Indeed, the latter of these options could be just the tonic for those who decide to brave out Christmas day at home. Hitting the highway on Boxing Day and heading for a relaxing three or four day festive break at a top spa hotel resort should provide ample recovery time and with a choice of Jacuzzis, hydropools, thermal suites, gyms, swimming pools and beauty treatment rooms, the stresses of Christmas will seem like a distant memory.

Europe, too, has a dizzying amount of options for Christmas breaks, and the famous German Christmas markets lure countless people there each year, each wanting to experience the magic candle lit stalls and Christmas lights, while the scents of mulled wine and roasted almonds fill the air.

Nobody likes to be a Christmas killjoy, but the fact is it is a time of year that can cause stresses and strains for many families. Whilst yuletide traditions play an important part throughout most of western society, there’s no reason whatsoever why people shouldn’t break from the norm now and again and sample a different kind of Christmas, one that is truly relaxing and free from usual festive frenzies.
