Car Grille
Grill is a French word taken from Latin craticula. Grill is an opening of several slits for air or water intake while blocking large particles. In auto industry it is usually an opening for air intake and is situated at the front of the vehicle to protect and cool down the radiator.
History
Grills on cars were first seen in 1903 and at that time arch shaped grill design was in fashion and remained in fashion for a long time until in 1923 it was replaced by astonishing sports car by Alfo Romeo.
As years passed by, manufacturers started to pay a lot of attention towards grill designing. In the 30s and 40s, new grill style were seen. For example bell-shaped grill were seen in Buick and Pontiac, split and slightly folded in Mercury but the real change in grill designing were seen after WWII.

Grills are of different styles and many car makers use distinctive grill styles to distinguish their cars from others. Like Rolls Royce arranges the grill bars by hand to make sure they are vertical. Similarly Range Rover has chrome teeth grill and if we look at Mitsubishi, their grill resembles that of a fighter jet. Audi comes with single frame grille, Ford with 3 grill bars. So in short the main grille of the car plays a vital role in the looks of the car. It gives character and charisma to a car. Many car makers use different grille styles to give the car some attitude, for example Ford F-150 has huge grille to make it look like a monstrous hude truck. A good grille adds life to a car.
Grill Types
There are four grill types.

Radiator grill is situated on the bumper. It is made for the air intake and protection of the radiator.
Bumper skirt grill is situated right below the radiator grill but it is made for styling purposes and to give the car an attitude. Many customized grill have bumper skirt grill which gives the car a heavy look. It is popular for showing off a car and for turning heads.
Fender grill is for the ventilation of the brake ventilation duct.
Hood scoop grill is famous for car that have intercooling system. Hood scoop grill thrashes the air inside the intercooler making the turbo run cooler and smoother. Many diesel engine cars are equipped with it.
Roof grill or trunk grill. Such a type of grill is seen on car having engine at the rear, For example Ferrari F-430 and Lamborghini Mucilage. Since their engine is situated at the rear end, air intake in the front would be of no use.

Grill Material
Material used on the grill can be of different types. The most popular is ABS plastic grill or Acrylonitrile butadiene strene. It is the standard OEM grill which is made from casting ABS plastic with other mixtures to make the plastic less expensive. ABS plastic grill are not fancy, don’t look too good and above all are very fragile.
Many auto makers use Billet grill which is made from aluminum giving it a lustrous shiny look. It adds charisma to a car.
For sports car, manufacturers use Mesh grill which is light and is made from steel woven mesh.
