Home security is often a matter of presentation and practice. Keeping a low profile, locking your doors, leaving a light on here and there—these are all really great ways to make your home less of a target for burglars. Nevertheless, if you want to take security to a whole new level, lots of great technology has come on the market in recent years. Types of things you only saw in movies or imagined in wild visions of the future are now available to homeowners all over America. While some of these new components are expensive, many are within reach of the average consumer. To say the least, all of them are pretty exciting!
Biometrics
Biometrics refers to technology that uses parts of the body to verify identity. All human bodies have unique “signatures” embedded in eyes, hands, and arrangements of features that can be detected and used to create a “key.”
Currently, several companies have home entry systems on the market that recognize hand shapes and fingerprints. The user establishes a number of permitted “signatures” that can be used to unlock doors by pressing fingers or holding a hand to the scanner. Some systems can be connected to a computer to record a history of who is entering at what times. While these systems are exciting and make lost keys a thing of the past, they are delicate and need to be protected from the elements. As such, they may be better suited to use indoors, perhaps to restrict entry to certain parts of the house.
Video Intercom
Video intercom systems allow homeowners to see who is at the door from monitors that can be placed throughout the house. Some systems can be connected to a secure internet portal that will allow a homeowner to monitor the home from anywhere in the world, and even speak to someone at the door as if they were at home.
Smart Homes
“Smart homes” are homes incorporating many technologies to automate and coordinate many functions relating to home security. For example, there are keypads for home alarm systems that be programmed to perform a certain series of actions in the event of a security breach, such as turn on lights, lock certain doors, and call the police. Others can be programmed so that blinds open or close at certain times of day, certain lights go on and off, and stereo systems play an album or two every evening while you are away.
Other examples of exciting technology that can be incorporated into home security systems:
Sound discriminating sensors that can detect the sound of breaking glass
Infrared cameras that provide clear video footage in total darkness.
Proximity card readers that can be used to allow keyless entry.
Home alarms that are sensitive enough to distinguish between animals and intruders, so that pets can roam freely while the system is armed.
Touch-screen pads with visual displays that match the layout of the home and display location specific information graphically.
