What is desowen and why is it prescribed?
Desowen is a topical steroid medication applied directly on the skin to relieve the itching and inflammation associated with a number of skin problems.
Its generic name is 'desonide' and it is also available under the brand name 'tridesilon'.
How should Desowen be administered?
Desowen is available in cream, lotion or ointment form. If you have been prescribed desOwen lotion, shake the container well before applying. Wash hands and then clean and dry the affected area. Now apply the medication as a thin film and slowly rub it in - repeat this procedure 2-3 times a day, or as instructed by your doctor.
Desowen should be used exactly as per your doctor's instructions. Here are a few things you should keep in mind while using this medication:
- Since some quantity of desowen is likely to be absorbed through the skin and thereby into the blood, avoid applying large quantities of the cream on large areas. Do not use dressings like adhesive bandages to cover the affected areas, except under your doctor's orders.
- DesOwen is meant only for topical use - avoid its contact with your eyes as it may cause glaucoma or irritation.
- You should completely avoid desowen if you happen to be allergic to any of its components.
What kind of side effects can you expect from desowen?
Unlike most medications or drugs, when it comes to
generic desowen, side effects cannot be predicted. In case of any noticeable change, inform your doctor of the same - he can decide whether you may continue its use.
Most of the side effects listed below occur rarely, and are likely to manifest if the affected area is kept covered or treated for a prolonged time. They may include:
- Allergic skin reactions
- Acne
- Burning and stinging sensations
- Itching, rashes
- Inflammation
- Skin loss
- Stretch marks
- Dryness
- Excessive hair growth
What to do if you miss or skip a dose
Apply
generic desowen as soon as you recall missing your dose. In case it is already time for the next dose, simply skip the missed dose and revert to your prescribed schedule.
What happens if you overdose on desowen
Like any other medication administered in excess, over or misuse of desowen can lead to serious consequences - if too much of this medication enters your body, it causes blood sugar to rise and worse still, a disorder known as Cushing's Syndrome, whose principal symptoms include a moon-shaped face, high BP, weight gain, and in women, growth of body and facial hair.
And in case you are pregnant or breastfeeding
Even though desowen is applied topically, one cannot know for sure what amount of it is absorbed into the bloodstream. Moreover, steroids are known to cause birth defects in animals. Hence it is safe to say that such preparations should be used moderately or for short periods of time by pregnant women.
