The new generation of Nokia mobile phones are very impressive and competitive in the current mobile phone environment. Simply put though, they are light years ahead of where mobile phones where just 25 years ago. It is important to know how the progression of Nokia phones has lead to the current products that are offered today. In 1982, Nokia first begin to offer car phones. The first car phone that they offered was called the Mobira Senator, which was for the NMT-450 networks. The Moibira Senator weighed an amazing 22 pounds. I don't think that anyone today could imagine a phone that it that big.

In 1987, Nokia came out with a newer, better phone. It was called the Mobira Cityman 900. And it was a major advance for mobile phones at the time. It was one of the first mobile phones that was a handheld phone. The phone weighed less than 2 pounds, a difference of 20 pounds from just a few years compared to the older model. The cost was very high though, as it cost nearly 4,600 American dollars. Despite the very high costs, the phone was flying off the shelves in the home market of Nokia, which is Finland. The Cityman phone also got a major boast in popularity and publicity when the leader of the USSR at the time, Mikhail Gorbachev, used the phone while he was in Finland back to Moscow, USSR. As a result of this incident, this phone was unofficially called the "Gorba".

Nokia in the early to mid 1990's continued to improve on their phones and the technology that went into the phones. Nokia was one of the key players that worked to develop the GSM network. The GSM network, which stands for Global System for Mobile Communications, was able to improve the quality of mobile phones and also was able to carry data. As a result of the development and growth of the GSM technology, more mobile phones came to market. These new phones has better reception so that more people could be called, and text messaging became popular during this time. Also, international phone calls were easier to make on a mobile phone.
