WoW guilds are diverse, having different goals, membership criteria or even lengths of time they want to remain active. A guild is basically a group of people who join together for a common purpose. There is no age limit to starting a guild; anyone can make their own guild for whatever they want to accomplish. The realm you’re playing in can influence the ones you’ll find.

Role playing realms commonly have some race, class or profession based guilds while PVP (Player vs Player) realms are thick with those that center around raiding, also called end-game guilds, because raiding parties are made of very high level characters. A controversial type is a Twink guild. Twinks are low level characters with the very best equipment bought by a player’s high level character. Much of their equipment is bought for an outrageous amount of gold. Many players feel buying equipment most characters of the same level couldn’t afford is verging on cheating.

WoW guilds started by a group of family and friends can remain exclusive but many have become open to the public. Non-related players still dominate the composition of most guilds and it isn’t uncommon to have to apply for membership or need a sponsor. These little mini societies are made up of all kinds of people but every successful one has a common bond, a good guild master. Knowing WoW well, being a good leader and keeping quality people as advisors and facilitators to help achieve the goals is how a guild thrives and brings in helping, useful members. Fellow guildies are encouraged to share gaming information, help each other with objectives and trade services, often leading to real friendships.

A truly important social and networking factor in WoW is the guild. Whether it is created exclusively for a chosen few or is open to the general population, a successful guild has involved players, a solid sense of community and strong leadership. Being a part of a collective as a learner or a teacher or as both enriches your gaming experience and those around you.
