There is so much to learn with a new born baby in the house every step of the way. How to hold the baby, feed it, regulate their sleep patterns and eventually wean them off breastfeeding. Another important aspect is naming the baby. Giving you baby an identity that is meaningful and that will define him/ her for the rest of his life.

As you can imagine, selecting a name for a baby is not easy. There are so many options and finding one becomes really tough. Sometimes women have names picked for their babies since they were kids themselves. If you are having trouble picking the perfect baby name here are a few guidelines to help you out.

• Once you know if it’s a boy or girl it makes your selection much easier and narrows down your options. Once you have a few baby name picked out, see how the baby name sounds. Does it sound sweet or is it too strong and harsh?

• Always remember, if the surname is too long the baby name should be shorter, but if you have a shorter surname you have the liberty of a longer baby name. Try choosing a baby name where the last letter of the name and the first letter of the surname is a vowel, it just sounds better that way.

• Your child’s name should not be too complicated and twisted. Think about he or she needs to able to pronounce their own name and surname. Yu don’t want their friends coming up with weird nicknames just because the name is too complicated.

• There are pros and cons when choosing a common name like Anne, Ben, or Michael. The disadvantage is that you will find many in the same classroom, playgroup or karate class! The good thing is that common names become easy to pronounce and the nicknames are harmless.

• Ask your close friends and neighbors for baby names. This way you will have a huge database to choose from. Another great way to find baby names is the family itself. You have an Aunt Rose or Grandfather Nicholas whose name can prove to be great for the baby. When you name the baby try and find out what it means, it’s a story to tell your kid when they grow up.
