I have been working in the film industry setting up audio equipment and making music, and would like to share with you some tips about getting started...
What a lot of people don't realise is that is is so easy to make music with a computer. You don't need much technical knowledge and you don't have to know how to play an instrument (however a little knowledge makes a huge positive impact).
To make music, essentially you need sequencing software. This can be found for free online, or you might like to go a little bit more advance and buy cubase or protools. These software packages allow you to create multiple tracks of sound, and control the parameters of each one individually (i.e. control the volumes, effects applied and equalisation).
In addition to this software you need a mixer and soundcard and microphones to be able to record live sounds and sample them to use in a recording. You may like to just record live music and for that you will need all this too. I started with an ebook which I downloaded onine which was incredibly helpful as it showed me step by step instructions for how to put together a home reording studio. https://paydotcom.com/r/10054/infotastic/418122/
Once you have what you need to get started, you must practise and experiment. It's fun! experimentation is the best way to familiarise yourself with the tools available. A few effects which you might want to start experimenting with are: delay, reverb (echo), filters. Also try cutting up music excerpts and repeating them. This is particularly useful when creating drum loops.
