Miami’s Gold Coast Railroad Museum is a attempt for members of Miami’s community to preserve fragments of the state’s history through chronicling the history of the railroad. Today, the endeavor has culminated in the fascinating museum, a must-see for fans of locomotives and an interesting visit for anyone else.

The exhibits are all, in some way, connected to one of the most historically important methods of transportation in this country’s history: railroads. One of the crown jewels of the museum’s collection is the Ferdinand Magellan presidential railroad car. While the Magellan is now off-limits for interior viewing, the majestic railcar is a sight in and of itself. With a history that stretches back to 1928, the Magellan was designed to carry presidents and, as such, as very unique among railcars.

Among other notable railcars, there are exhibits devoted to general concepts in railroads, such as passenger cars. These exhibits are fascinating and informative, giving a great glimpse into railroads and what it takes to make a sturdy railcar that will see widespread usage. There are also hands-on exhibits within the model train area of the museum, which is a sight to behold. Model train lovers young and old will be fascinated by all that there is to see.

Special exhibits throughout the museum include trains that you can actually ride to get an up close and personal view of railroads in action. The Gold Coast Railroad Museum, which is located at 12450 SW 152nd St, is a great place for parties and meetings, especially if a locomotive theme is desired. The museum is closed on Mondays and opens otherwise from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. General admission for adults and children older than 12 is $5 per person, while children younger than that get in for $3.00. Check with the museum beforehand so that you can participate in any events.
