Whether we like it or not, technology is a major factor which determines what is going to be the next great gig out there. Consider this: a decade ago, the world had no need for such job titles as C++ programmers, medical transcriptionist, search engine optimisers, and many more. Even a peek at job classifieds will give you a full lowdown on the most popular jobs available today. But they're all here now, a welcome addition to such time-honored professions of doctors, teachers, lawyers, etc.

Aside from technology, demographic shifts, legislative changes, business trends, and consumer behaviour also affect the jobs that gets created and discarded in the job market.

Now, we are living longer, retiring later, and pursuing higher education at a higher rate than generations before us. Job opportunities are changing faster than for it takes us to master them in college. But that doesn't mean we should despair. The state of Australian jobs today is healthy. We just need to keep updated to always remain indispensable in the the job market.


Here are some of today's jobs that are on the cutting edge:

RADIATION THERAPIST

What they do: Work with radiation oncologists (people specialising in treating cancer) in administering treatment as prescribed and supervised by the doctor. They also maintain records and check operations of the radiology equipment.
What you need: Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Medical Radiation Technology or equivalent qualifications recognized by the Australian Institute of Radiography. You must hold a Statement of Accreditation in Radiation Therapy from the Australian Institute of Radiography and eligible to apply for EPA licence to use ionising radiation apparatus. Extensive experience in all aspects of radiation therapy simulation, mould room procedures, planning and treatment delivery on a range of radiotherapy equipment especially multi-modality linear accelerators


GENETIC COUNSELLOR (Master of Health Science (Genetic Counselling)
What they do: Assist families who have members with birth defects and other genetic disorders. Genetic Counsellors aid in educational and administrative roles related to genetic counselling and inherited health issues.
What you need: Graduate health professionals with specialist training in genetics and counselling, certified by the Human Genetics Society of Australasia (HGSA), to provide genetic counselling in conjunction with a clinical geneticist. A Bachelor's Degree concentrating on biology/biosciences, psychology, genetics or nursing and a Master's Degree in genetic counselling.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST
What they do: Occupational therapists are health professionals trained to assist people of all ages overcome factors, which limit their ability to function in certain "occupational roles". These limiting factors may have been caused by injury or illness; psychological or emotional difficulties; developmental delay; or the effects of ageing. Occupational therapists consider individual strengths, disabilities, goals, and social and environmental resources, then work to optimise clients' functioning ability and quality of life. They treat physical, mental, and emotional disabilities through art expression.

What you need: A Bachelors, Masters, or Doctoral Degree. The occupational therapy assistant generally earns an associate degree. Practitioners must complete supervised clinical internships in a variety of health care settings, and pass a national examination. Most states also regulate occupational therapy practice.
