The Negombo beach is one of the more popular and enchanting beaches found in the west coast of Sri Lanka. Located just thirty seven kilometers north of Colombo the capital city, it is only seven kilometers away from the Bandaranaike International Airport.
At dusk and early dawn most of the area along the beach stretch is occupied by the fisher folk; who in their outrigger sail boats would either be sailing off to the sea in hope of making a good catch or be returning back to shore. Those interested in purchasing fresh fish can do so at the beach itself or at the famous Llelama the second largest fish market in Sri Lanka. One can also find an assortment of seafood ranging from crabs to prawns freshly caught from the Negombo lagoon in the fish market.
Unique and vivid seashells can be found along the Negombo beach in abundance, but to acquire the best one must reach the beach quite early, since it is a habit followed by many visitors. Though the beach is never vacant, enough space can be found to enjoy a game of beach volleyball or rugby. Towards the evening many people are seen leisurely strolling along the beach enjoying the sea breeze and the spectacular view of the setting sun. A number of locals are also seen selling a variety of food items ranging from pineapples to fried prawns and boiled lentils.
The sea along the Negombo beach is considered as a safe area where one could enjoy a relaxing sea bath or indulge in their favorite water sport. One could even hire an outrigger sail boat used by the fisher folk to go fishing.
Staying in Negombo one can also visit many closely located attractions such as the Muthurajawela and Wilpattu National Park, two popular
site seeing venues in Sri Lanka.
There is never a dull moment at Negombo beach with something interesting taking place every passing minute. With so much activity around one should not miss visiting this amazing place. Staying at a
Negombo beach hotel such as the Jetwing Beach offering a range of superior services is where one can enjoy the surf, sun and sand for as long you please.
