The internet is many things to many people. The most obvious is that it is a vast warehouse of information containing within it the total sum of the knowledge of humanity – didn’t know that did you? It is a place of commerce where almost any product or service can be bought and if not then at least information on how to obtain it can be found. It is a tool that has come to define our modern time so much so that it is the defining factor in the reason why we are living in what has been coined the information age.
It is also perhaps the biggest and best (or worst) time waster you can find. Easily accessible with a large majority of it offering free entertainment, it is no wonder that it can easily suck you into spending hours which add up to days and even weeks of time online. Try this next time you are at your computer not working see how much time you spend there, mark down all your time for a week and see what the number is, guaranteed you’ll be surprised.
Now, it’s not a bad thing spending (wasting) time on the internet, this author is at least as guilty as anyone else for giving over to it’s frivolities. In that sense you should be pleased since during all my travels on the information superhighway this author has found quite a few sites that are excellent places to spend your time. Some you may have heard of and others probably not but since you’re spending so much time aimlessly wandering you may as well go somewhere where you will be entertained. Either way each is worth spending a little time on so that your time wasted on the net is time well spent.
So here is a list of excellent time wasters that you can use to wile away those long hours when you feel no real need to be productive and just want something to do.
www.youtube.com – This has to be a granddaddy of all time wasters, watching videos about everything and anything that comes to mind. For just about any topic that you can think of there is a video for it on youtube but, the real draw is that the people creating in and starring in these videos are no different than yourself. You too can make videos and be a star or, just sit back and let the moving pictures roll over you. Just don’t do this too much at work unless you’re in the video editing business otherwise you’ll have no excuse as to why you’re watching videos on company time.
www.twitter.com – Now this is a way to keep up with everyone that you know and to annoy the hell out of them at the same time and spend a lot of time doing it. Join and see, people are twittering all day everyday about everything and I mean everything they do. See people that are constantly texting? Chances are that they aren’t even responding to a direct message but just a tweet or are posting their own. So, you have the added benefit of a good time waster plus people think that you’re really popular because you’re always texting.
www.facebook.com – Want an excuse to sit in front of your computer for hours and not feel guilty about it? This is another stand bye, a place to re-connect with old friends and make new ones. Keep people you know what your up to and see what friends, family and aquantences are doing. This truly proves that the old adage is true, that if you know six people then you know the entire world.
www.onepageoneworld.com – Ever wanted to look at thousands of pictures in one place, not just one site but one page? That’s what this site is “The Whole World on a Single Page”. Thousands of tiny pictures that each have a pop-up so you can see a bigger version. To boot some are in black in white, why you say? So that when one is purchased it can be colorized and a link of the buyers choice added. A truly addictive site that make you want to come back to see what’s changed and, to look at more tiny pictures.
www.abovetopsecret.com – Tired of the traditional news, all polished and slick and perhaps just bit too well put together? Then check out the best place on the net for conspiracies, UFO's, paranormal, secret societies, political scandals, new world order, terrorism, and dozens of related topics. See what people who have far too much time on their hands are wondering about and be able to provide a unique slant to any conversation. Something seem odd? Government did it. Government do something odd? A super elite group that actually controls the government did it. Just be aware that after too much time on this site and you’ll be known as the ‘Conspiracy Guy/Girl.
