Sometimes, in the typical grind of trying to work more and earn a better salary, we forget that the possibility to save can have just as powerful an impact as increased revenue. Cutting back can deliver a similar amount of breathing room as piling on.
In the case of home improvement projects, the concept of spending now to save later is often a deterrent. However, one must realize that while the old windows and HVAC equipment are draining your budget on a monthly basis, it’s like taking from one pocket and giving it to the other -- or better yet, like losing a little from both. Maybe a larger scale HVAC project is not in store for you. Regardless, here are five tips for saving on your energy expenses
1. Make it naturally cooler. Are you trapping the heat in different parts of your home? Remember that hot air rises, so some windows on your upper floors could be opened to lessen the overall heat impact of the summer months, without letting in enough to counteract the effect. Get an idea of the wind currents throughout the home and experiment.
2. Keep out the unwanted weather. Whether you realize it or not, the type of insulation your windows and window frames are determining the temperature and feeling of comfort inside your home. Even if window replacement is not an option for you at the moment, upgrading your insulation tools is recommended to keep out the unwanted heat or chill.
3. Don’t let the seasons define the temperature. We’ve all noticed how seasons can have days that are out of character. A warmer winter afternoon or a cooler summer day could mean a day off for your heating and cooling system. When your equipment has seen better days, you’re probably going to notice the impact of even a short holiday on your energy costs.
4. A system overhaul. It may seem like the unacknowledged gorilla in the room, a HVAC system that has run its course. Changing your system will be a significant expense, but get out the calculator. Figure out what you will save on a monthly basis on energy costs and calculate what it’s really going to cost, other than from an up-front perspective.
5. Don’t let the weather trap you at home. When the heat is bearing down and you know you’ll have the AC cranking all day, why take the bait of nature? Gather up the family and head out to the mall for the afternoon, letting your system take a breather for a while. Better yet, go to the pool, the lake or the beach and let the natural breezes and waters serve as your source of air.
