The use of a bearing was a concept that was first applied to drive shafts, however shortly after factory engineers found an array of other uses for these bearings. This wide spread use came about when it was realized that individual parts of machinery could easily move over ramps with the help of bearings, so how else are they now used?

One of the most common forms of bearings is known as ball bearings however this isn’t the only type available. There are a number of ways in which they can be classified such as hydrodynamic, hydrostatic and rolling element bearings. In the case of a ball bearing however one of the easiest ways of demonstrating how it works comes in the form of a roller skate. At a closer inspection of the wheels you will be able to notice that there is a collection of small metal balls that surround the axle, these are the ball bearings. What they do is as the skater pushes forward each of the bearings absorbs the load placed on it in a temporary manner. Also they roll in a track that is present around the axle. As they are perfectly round and smooth there is also very little friction generated, allowing the skater to move in a straight line with hardly any resistance.
The use of a bearing is to stop two surfaces from coming into contact with each other. It bears the load of something while still allowing said object to rotate. They truly are indispensible pieces of machine elements and due to these factors we have seen them become used more and more in aspects that make up our daily lives. In our society today, as I have mentioned above, the majority of the machinery that we use and the technology we rely on have bearings present within them, clearly demonstrating just how important they actually are to us.
