Convertible cars are one of the most distinguished types of cars with which man has ever come up. They have been specially designed for people who want to drive something more than a car. Convertibles in a way are very different from a normal car. The drive and features might be the same but the experience is unique. The owners of Convertibles would have the feel of open air all around them and this would be a priceless experience.
Convertibles have been in business since the early days of automobile industry. Everything has changed over the years and this stands true for Convertibles as well. They now come in several different types; these included Convertible sports cars and luxury cars. For a while now many car manufacturers have even produced Convertible trucks and some of them became popular with the buyers as well.
It is very hard to define, but the appeal that comes with a classic Convertible car consists of the environment around it, what is visible about the car and also part fantasy.
The first Convertible was produced in 1908 but the first model that got the Convertibles their due fame was the Ford’s well-known Model T. This Convertible was the first model to be ever mass-produced. Model T came with a cloth roof that folded. It had different door and windows options available depending on the driver’s choice.
Initially Convertibles were used as a hobby and were not thought to be suitable for everyday use. Their purpose was only to give out pleasurable experience and had the reputation of not an everyday car. Models were first produced, and were distributed exclusively as convertibles and the fully enclosed real production came once the model became popular.
During the first two decades of the twentieth century, car ownership started becoming common and so car manufacturers started making convertible models that are more practical. However, the original phenomenon is still around, and even today, Convertibles are introduced as the higher-end models within an existing line of models and is always priced above its regular equivalent model.
Convertibles can be easily distinguished by the nature and design of their roofs. Majority of the models come with a flexible fabric roof that is rested on a metal structure. These models are most commonly known as soft tops. Another type would be the hard top Convertibles that have a rigid roof mostly commonly consisting of hinged panels. These provide a better shield against the noise from outside the car and against the weather as well.
The list of most famous Convertibles produced to date would include the Chevrolet Corvette, first American sports car of the modern era, which was originally designed in 1953 as a Convertible. The famous Ford Mustang known as the pioneer of muscle cars was also initially designed as a Convertible in 1964. These days Aston Martin, BMW and Mercedes- Benz top the list of best producers of Convertibles. These cars are very expensive and are considered a trademark of style with power.
