The CCTV is used to transmit the signals of any particular location to some specific monitors. It is the short form used to describe the closed circuit television. Only some specific set of monitors receive the pictures transmitted through these cameras and the number of these monitors is limited. The security cameras of the closed circuit television do not transmit the signal to everyone who wants to access it as is the case with the broadcast television.

The closed circuit television cameras is most commonly used for the purpose of surveillance and hence these are normally placed in crowded areas and areas where security is important like the banks, ATMs, airports, casinos and the military facilities to name a few. These CCTV cameras are also found in gas stations and many shops where it is left to the discrimination of the owner of the place whether he wants it there or not. Many private places also go ahead and install these cameras to ensure security.

These closed circuit television cameras are not just limited to the banks and the airports. They are also installed in places which at times may not be comfortable for the visitors. The purpose of these cameras many a time is to observe certain facts that are controlled from some control rooms. Many a time there are some industrial processes which are very dangerous and thus for these types of processes these CCTV systems are used. In many countries there is a law that says that the closed circuit cameras need to be installed inside the reactors and the facilities that generates nuclear fuel.

Since there has been a rise in violence against the taxi drivers, these cameras can now be found inside the taxis as well. Also when the police vans are out on surveillance then these CCTV Cameras are used to record the happenings. The main purpose of the closed circuit television has been to ensure security but it has led to a debate for being commonly used now in the public places. The debate is over the issue that these cameras violate the privacy rights of the people which many consider to be more important then their security.

These closed circuit television cameras were first being used inside the government buildings and gradually it started being used outside as well primarily in the banks and the ATMs. Today the popularity of this camera has grown so much that it does not cost much to buy and install these cameras and hence people have now started using it inside their homes as well. The CCTV cameras have proved to be very successful after being installed in the parking lots as it has been seen that the car crime rate has decreased significantly since its installation there. The closed circuit cameras have proved to be helpful in detecting criminals and the images caught on these cameras are used to prosecute these criminals further.
