When you learned English, you did not do so with quizzes, note cards, and vocabulary lists. All this does is force you to memorize words in time for the test. Then, you have to move on to the next list for the next test rather than continuing to use what you last learned.
The better way to actually learn a language, just like you did with English, is by associating yourself with the languages by hearing it and seeing objects within the environment on a daily basis. Little by little your vocabulary will grow and you will begin to grasp the language.
