Ian Thorpe, one of the most famous swimmers in the world has announced his retirement from the swimming pools and that will be effective starting November 21st. Even though the Australian has retired he might keep earning millions of dollars in endorsements at least for the next few years, since he is known as the most marketable athlete.

Thorpe who is just 24 years made his decision public at a press conference in Sydney, Australia.

The swimmer has achieved eight Olympic medals that include five of gold and 11 World Championship Titles. Between the years 1999 and 2004 he set 22 world best times and nobody has broken his 200 and 400 meter freestyle world records yet.

Thorpe earned three titles at the 2000 games in Sydney, Australia. In 2001 in Japan, he became the only swimmer that has won six gold medals at a World Championship.

Currently, the Australian receives more than U.S. $2.5 million per year from endorsements. Among Thorpe’s sponsors stand out Adidas AG, Omega, Audi AG and Accor SA. Plus, he has a contract with a food company that sales a range of products under the brand of Thorpedo, as he is also known.

The Thorpedo has his own line of fragrance and underwear too. So as we can see, he has nothing to worry about for the next years to come.

Thorpe declared that he retired to chase other interests.
