Unfortunately, no-one has yet discovered the elixir of youth and consequently growing older is inevitable. This is the fate of us all and the external signs of growing older is the cause of great anxiety to most women and many men in our modern society. So, to the person who can develop a way to prevent lines and wrinkles developing, permanently, will go a massive financial prize and the heartfelt thanks of millions.

Wrinkles form when the skin thins, becomes drier and loses its elasticity. These initially start around the eyes with the formation of "crows feet" and then spread to the cheeks and around the lips.

There are many contributory factors to the development of wrinkles with diet, skin care, stress and lifestyle being particularly important.

(a) One of the most important factors is exposure to the ultraviolet rays of the sun which do most damage to the skin by reducing its elasticity. The effects of the suns rays are cumulative, so build up over the years.

The obvious recommendation, therefore, is to take appropriate protection against overexposure to sunlight particularly when the sun is strongest by the application of sun screen.

(b) Diet is important to every aspect maintaining a healthy body and particularly so for the skin. As in all things, balance is vital so your diet should include fruits, vegetables, whole grain foods, seeds, nuts and legumes augmented with fatty acids obtained from vegetable oils.

One of the basic factors of any healthy regime is a regular intake of water, (8 glasses a day is recommended). This will help to keep the skin hydrated and to flush away toxins.

(c) Lifestyle factors also have a direct effect on skin quality. Smoking is a definite no-no and intake of alcohol and caffeine should be limited, if not eliminated. They all cause the skin to dry and this encourages wrinkle formation.

(d) Stress has a profound effect on one's health and often on one's face, so try to offset the causes of stress as far as possible. On a similar note, it apparently only takes 17 muscles to smile but 43 to frown - a very good reason to avoid frowning.

So, while we cannot stop the aging process there are some simple, basic steps we can take to prevent lines and wrinkles forming prematurely and help preserve that youthful face.

Natural Remedies and Medicines that Really Work
