Samsung’s B3310 Fails the Lineage

Samsung is known for having come up with some of the most practical and useful electronics and appliances these past few years. Their home electronics are so well made, that their quality is often compared to industry giants such as Sony. The same can be said about their mobile phones, Samsung’s mobile lineup has some of the best phones released in the past couple of years. This is why it is such a surprise to see Samsung come up with the horrendous creation that is the B3310. Specs wise, this is actually a pretty decent mobile phone, but visually, this phone looks like it has been beaten with an ugly stick. The phone’s distinct feature, and major defect, is the position and orientation of its numeric keypad.

Everything on the Side

The number pad follows a vertical path along the left side of the mobile phone’s screen. How bad does it look? Really bad; the initial reactions of mobile watchers range from slightly aghast to total disgust. Most mobile review sites border from surprised to the totally confused as to how a design like this ever reached the production queue. This is not the first time we have seen a badly designed mobile device. Nokia has a reputation for coming up with the most bizarre and impractical mobile phone designs. Hopefully, Samsung stops this right here before it becomes a bad habit.

Forgetting the Basic Rules of Ergonomics

If there is one thing that makes this phone real bad, is that it completely throws the concept of practicality out the window. Having all buttons on the side of the screen does not make things any easier for anyone. In fact, using the phone with only one hand is next to impossible. You have to use both left and right hands just to use this phone, and it still feels awkward at that. You can pop out the full QWERTY keyboard for faster typing and that’s a really nice touch. But aside from that, you will be left wondering why this phone was made this way.

The bad layout aside, this would have been a pretty decent phone. It has a 2 mega pixel camera, an FM radio, Bluetooth and full 2G. As a GSM phone, it has all the basic no-nonsense features you would expect. If only they adjusted the keypad to be a little more comfortable to use, this would have been another grab and go mobile device. Sadly, due to its badly designed layout, this is one mobile phone that will probably be stared at and eventually forgotten.
