Chicago is commonly thought of as one of the main cities worth visiting in the US. But while this is true the Windy City can offer a variety of beaches to enjoy alongside all the usual city excursions as well.

Some of the beaches enable you to dip your toes into Lake Michigan. But whichever beach you visit during your stay, you can enjoy a range of activities and sights designed to cater for every beach lover.

Oak Street Beach is a good place to start at, particularly if you love your shopping as well. It is very close to the famous Magnificent Mile in Chicago. This is situated in North Michigan Avenue, which runs parallel to most of the best beaches in the city. Oak Street Beach should be your destination, particularly if you love watching the world go by.

Loyola Leone Beach is another hot favourite for those who have children. Not only that, it happens to be Chicago’s biggest beach as well. This gives you plenty of room to spread out and relax while the kids wear themselves out for the day.

Of course, one of the most enjoyable activities during a day at the beach is swimming. And Chicago’s beaches are no exception. Chicago enjoys a number of beaches that have lifeguards and a flag system in operation as well. This means you can always swim in safe conditions and you will know when swimming is banned because of adverse conditions too.

If you’d like to swim just streets away from the best shops in Chicago, try the 31st Street Beach, the 63rd Street Beach and Calumet Beach. All of these have parking facilities, although you won’t be too far away from where you are staying. If you can hop on public transport so much the better.

But as well as the larger beaches you can also enjoy smaller ones in the city. Street end beaches – so named because of their position – are very common, and Juneway Terrace Beach is a nice example of this. It has been owned by the city council for some fifty years now, and many locals enjoy it just as much as visitors to the Windy City.

It’s amazing to think that a Chicago holiday could turn into a beach holiday. But if you book your hotel close to the Lake Michigan shores, you can see that you could have the best of both worlds here – the city and the beach.

And there are lots of Chicago hotels to choose from as well. So wherever you stay, if you are within sight of the shoreline and its many beaches, you will have an even more versatile holiday to look forward to.
