Working with a recruiter who specializes in the region can help you be sure your skills are in demand. For example, says Ken April, president of April International, a finance and technology recruiting firm in New Rochelle, N.Y., the job market is bouncing back in Japan and Hong Kong, especially for those skilled in middle- and back-office functions. "Risk is a growing issue too, so market risk and risk management will be growing areas," April says. Also in demand will be audit professionals, especially those with capital markets experience.
April sees opportunities for finance professionals growing in China as well, as more investment banking and other finance deals are generated there.
Candidates with a technology background and international banking expertise are in demand in Russia, England, Spain and Germany, according to Jeanne Branthover, managing director and head of the global financial services practice at Boyden Global Executive Search in New York. In particular, she sees mortgage, treasury services and international private banking as being hot fields in those countries.
Whichever field you're interested in, be certain you want to live in the country you've focused on. If you're thinking of international placement as a temporary thing to pad your resume once you get back to the U.S., you'd best reconsider your move, recruiters say. While some employers stateside will find your global work experience attractive, that isn't enough of an incentive to make your relocation worthwhile, Branthover believes.
