This particularly interesting automobile by the giant automaker Volkswagen is a medium sized SUV (sports utility vehicle). It has been on a continued production line since the year 2003. The Touareg was the third SUV manufactured by the Volkswagen, after two of its previous models the Volkswagen 181 Kurierwagen and the well known Iltis. The name Touareg was derived from a Berber speaking clan residing in North Africa who was known as the Tuareg folks.
The Touareg is built in the city of Bratislava located in the small Eastern Europe country of Slovakia. The strong V8and V6 engines of this SUV are incorporated in the models that are sold in the American domestic market due to varying environmental and pricing related policies of the American government. The Volkswagen Touareg is available with the standard system of four wheel drive system. The SUV is also incorporated with a hoard of interesting features such as an innovatively built locking centre differential that is fully automatic, and integrated in-cabin control equipments. Moreover, the availability of a full fledged air suspension system enables the car’s height to be adjusted accordingly. Also included is a smart interior switch that is capable of manually locking the rear differential. The load level clearance of the ground of the Touareg is about 6.3 inches, the off road level being at 9.6 inches and the extra clearance of approximately 11.8 inches.
Touareg was amidst a controversial situation when one of its exclusive models the V10 TDI was declared by ACEEE (the US administrative authority managing energy efficient matters of the nation) as the most dreadful vehicle of the year 2007 harming the environment. The Volkswagen V10 TDI used to run on diesel. It was banned from being sold in the US market and was replaced by the model that used a cleaner V6 TDI engine. The Touareg, in a period of 3 years from 2003 till 2005, won prestigious international awards. The magazine Car and Driver declared the Touareg as the Best luxury SUV for the year 2003. In the year 2004, it was declared as the sports utility of the year by the magazine Motor Trend. Also, it successfully bagged the award of the four wheeler of the Year for 2005 as per the judgment of the magazine Four Wheeler. The second generation model of this SUV the Touareg 2 has added sophisticated features like the shield grille, an extremely advanced adaptive cruise control system to aid in better maneuvering of the car, a high end traction control system and other related sophisticated facilities. It was a hit in the US automobile market. Volkswagen has planned to again release a diesel version of the Touareg with the trusted V6 TDI engine (taking a lesson from the V10 engine fiasco a few years back). Volkswagen is confident of this new version of clearing every green norm.
