Doors need to be reinforced. If you’ve got old doors or doors with glass panes, you’ll want to consider swapping them out for newer, sturdier, heavy duty doors that can withstand an assault from a burglar. A lot of the time, burglars will enter through a front door using very little force; they can simply jimmy the lock or kick the door in. Flimsy wooden doors without deadbolt locks can easily be kicked open. Older locks are also very easy for thieves to pick.
Do install deadbolt locks with there inch screws. Double deadbolt locks, where you need a key to get in as well as out are very effective; however, with these locks, you should make sure to always have a key while inside in the case of a fire or other emergency.
Install locks on all windows. There are special locks which allow you to prop open a window to let in cool air or to ventilate a room, but thieves won’t be able to pry the window open any further to climb inside.
Also, don’t forget about lighting. Get motion detecting lights to light up the area in front of your home, the driveway, and any pathways leading up to your door. You may also want to consider getting dusk to dawn lights to keep your home well lit.
