Have you ever asked yourself the question, who or what is influencing my food choices? Are you aware of the influences that shape your health and wellness as a result of your food choices? Are you being sabotaged in your pursuit of permanent fat loss?
The media has shaped our culture as it shapes our lives in the foods that we eat. People can blindly follow the constant messages that the media communicates to us in a wide variety of channels. The media uses commercials, celebrities, sales, misinformation, coupons, event sponsorship and more. The media has the power to change the way people eat. So many people blindly follow the media’s recommendations for food/nutrition. For example at one time they convinced us that butter was bad and margarine is better. The media manipulates our food buying patterns. Are they motivated by helping people live long and healthy lives? Or is their motivation to make more and more money? Is it more profitable to have overweight people? The food industry and the medical profession win and you lose.
Our friends and family influence our food choices. We learn from our family and we are shaped by the habits of our friends. If our family and friends have unhealthy eating habits, we tend to follow their examples. Many habits are formed during our childhood, while others develop as we change our lifestyle. That lifestyle may have healthy or unhealthy behaviors that are a result of goals and environment. We want our friends and family to support our pursuit of permanent fat loss.
Hunger influences our food choices. Obeying hunger signals, one can eat whatever is available and then eat too much. An easy way to quickly curb those hunger pangs is to drink a big glass of water. Time of day can be an eating trigger. Eating patterns are time determined. In my family, dinner was on the table every night at 5:30. Along with hunger and time of day, our mood will prompt us to eat. When depressed, eating sugar causes a chemical reaction in our brain that makes us feel good. Using sugar to solve your mood issues can lead to weight gain and an addiction to sugar.
Culture plays an important role in our food choices. Examine different cultures around the world and you will see the power of food. Some cultures don’t struggle with obesity and health issues due to people being overweight. Those people aren’t looking for solutions for permanent fat loss.
Time and money will influence your food choices. Buying and eating healthy food does require more money and more time to prepare. A person on a limited budget will grab convenient food that is inexpensive and quick to eat. This is obvious when you see the number of “Fast Food” restaurants in lower income communities.
Be aware of the daily influences on your life regarding your eating and nutrition. Work to develop new habits that will give you the nutrition to have a healthy body as you live out your healthy lifestyle. Better food choices leads to permanent fat loss. Lets Live Long-Live Strong !
